Summer Lodge full of Summer Sunshine and ….. plum Jam

Breakfast roses with effectsHi Everyone – It’s good to be back – our sincere thanks to the BT Open Reach Team who have made it possible – we are back on line!

I find it amazing we are already mid-way through July, the sun continues to shine on Summer Lodge Devon and it’s a real pleasure being here. The views from Summer Lodge continue to charm and soothe our visitors.

The forecast for the next few days is more sunshine so those of you who are inspired to Get Involved following the huge amount of sport brilliantly covered by BBC last weekend,  we have our very own  Summer Lodge Nordic Walking breaks planned for August.  I am delighted to say these special weekends are proving very popular so if you fancy a change of scene and a few days away where you can revel in the great outdoors please take a look at our special offer page and see if we can tempt you – it’s a great opportunity to get out into the fresh air and learn something new which will probably be of benefit to you for years to come.   All our walks are taken with a Caroline our in house qualified instructor and equipment is also  included. I realised this morning I often have requests for Summer Lodge Devon handmade Plum and Cinnamon jam.       It happened again this morning.  So I thought I would share the recipe with you – The original recipe came from Jams & Chutneys written by Thane Prince and published by Dorling Kindersley Ltd.

I enjoy making this jam the kitchen smells wonderfully sweet and fruity.  It keeps very well and is a great way to take the summer sunshine through to the winter months.

Plum and Cinnamon Jam

This is what you need

1kg red plums

1Kg of white granulated sugar

1 teaspoon of finely ground cinnamon

250ml water



This is what you do

Cut the plums in half and remove the stones

Place the stoned fruit into a preserving pan and add 250ml of water, sugar, cinnamon.

Cook gently until all the sugar has dissolved – this will take about 10-15 minutes

Once the sugar has dissolved increase the heat and bring the mixture to a rolling boil and cook for

3-5 minutes until the jam has reached setting point. Be careful not to over boil as this will make the finished jam very thick.

Pot into hot sterilized jars, seal and label.
